My convenience cushions are a part of a greater body of work that addresses consumerism and the habits, addictions, and so-called needs that we create for ourselves in western society.
I am taking a tool like a toaster or garlic press that is, to us, an every-day object, and using it as my subject matter in order to both give ode to it and satirize it at the same time. The fact that they are painted on fabric and that the fabric becomes a pillow emphasizes and illustrates that these objects are not necessities in our lifestyle.
Having traveled and lived in many parts of the world that do fine without these tools, I feel both removed from and in awe of the few items that provide luxury for me in my own home, and these soft sculptures are whimsical, yet serious portrayals of these ideas that contain an underlying commentary on the way we live our lives.
